Put on Your Best Boys

This image was inspired by "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry. The line that spawned this image: "So, put on your best, boys, and I'll wear my pearls."

I've had this idea in my head for months, after first hearing the song on the radio, but just never had the will to draw it. Yesterday, when I was planning on working on a Legend of Zelda project, I ended up with this beautiful drawing (or the outline of it).

Here you see Al Potter, Rose Weasley, and Scorpius Malfoy. I don't know what where they are, or why. Has something terrible happened, and that's why they are all in black? Are they about to disapparate somewhere? I don't know those answer, either. It was just some random drawing.

The background actually wasn't planned out until this afternoon. If you know of the song, then you'll nod and go "ah." "If I die young, bury me in satin, lay me down on a bed of roses, sink me in the river at dawn, send me away with the words of a love song."
So, you see, I've connected many elements to the opening line (which is also the chorus). Rose is wearing a satiny dress (or it is supposed to appear shiny like satin). There is a flourishing rose bush behind the trio; it's not a bed, but it's still roses. There's a river behind them... although I see it does sort of look like an ocean because I forgot to draw sight of more land. The song also mentions pearls, and that's what Rosie is supposed to be wearing, pearl necklaces.

I love drawing curly hair; I just do. It is so beautiful, and Rose's hair looked good in the lineart but spectacular when colored. The black rose in her hair is another homage to the roses mentioned in the song, but it also fits well if something bad has happened. Her lace gloves were an afterthought while I was drawing. I just thought they were a nice touch (her hands seemed naked and missing something). I gave her eye shadow and lipstick when I originally hadn't planned to, but I'm happy with the choice. Rose's dress is an inspired by Hermoine's dress robes of GOF. In all honesty, I don't think it proper to wear a dress that compliments one's cleavage while in the company of your male cousin. It just makes things awkward. Either she's much more endowed than her mother, or that dress has a corset. She's liable to have a wardrobe malfuntion at any moment, there. I say she's showing off for Scorpius (who I see as her crush, yet she's too stubborn to admit she actually likes him; so, it ends up that Scorpius is always chasing after her).

Explaination for the boys. If you recognize the inspiration for Al's look, mega kudos to you! I wanted his hair long, though, because I thought Daniel looked best with the scruffy, long hair in GOF. I did use Daniel as reference for Al because it's said that the boy looks just like Harry. I'm happy with it because I can see Daniel's appearance in the drawing (if you look close, you'll notice his eyes are green, like the book states.. If Al wore glasses, and had a scar on his forehead, it might be more noticeable. His right arm looks stiff, to me, because it's just hanging there. But, I didn't like my idea to put his hand in his pocket. Now, I think that would have looked better, and I like the thought of him being laid back despite whatever is happening. By the way, his jacket is supposed to look blue. It's black velvet, or maybe velour.

Okay, Scorpius. There are two reasons for his two-toned hair. If you know the first, again, mega kudos to you. But, it's also an homage to his grandmother, Narcissa, in the movies. Whereas I prefer to keep Narcissa blonde in my stories, the movie had her with black and blonde hair. Dark down the middle, blonde on the sides. So, I gave Scorpius that, but not because he was born with dark hair. He's blonde, but he's hexed his hair to have the dark strip down the center. I used a reference of Tom and of a hottopic model (back before they stopped photographing full shots of the models) that looks perfect. He looks odd, to me, but I think it's the dark hair that throws me. Because he cares so deeply for Rose, he is holding her hand with both of his. Yeah, I had a hard time with his and Al's poses. Scorpius left arm is still not right. I did my best.

I love this drawing, and it makes me want to draw more. Definitely one where Rose and Scorpius are dancing and dressed like this.

Also, on a random note: while I've always been a RosexScorpius shipper, I have had notions of wanting to draw AlxScorpius while working on this. I just like thought of Al in Scorpius' lap while Score storkes his hair. It seems cute, to me. *shrug* If someone sees this, and wants to draw that, I would love to see it.
